- Recorded blues started in 1920 with, Mamie Smith's, 'Crazy Blues'. In it's earliest recorded form, the blues was dominated by women! Red Hot Mamas! These "blues shouters" weaved their tales of heartbreak, sex, booze, love, and of course, fool men - often to the soundtrack of a full blown jazz band.
