- The term "Totalism" was coined by Kyle Gann in 1997 to refer to a style of composition which aims to balance surface rhythmic energy with background complexity. Despite style arose in the 80s as a response to minimalism, the term "Totalism" has yet to be adopted by contemporary musicology.
