- According to myth, Europa was a Phoenician princess whom Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, fell in love with. Zeus changed himself into a white bull to capture Europa and carried her away to the island of Crete. Over time, “Europe” became used more broadly and refers to the lands north of Greece.
